Kayaking for Beginners on Calm Water
A kayak is one of the best ways to see a lake: quiet, close to the water and simple to learn. Start small and calm.
What kayaking is
Kayaking uses a low boat in which the paddler sits facing forward, using a double-bladed paddle. Recreational sit-on-top kayaks are stable and forgiving for beginners.
First trips
- Choose a calm morning with little wind.
- Stay close to shore and paddle into the wind first, so the return is easier.
- Wear a life jacket and dress for the water temperature, not the air.
Basic stroke
Sit upright, hold the paddle with hands a little wider than shoulders, and rotate your torso rather than pulling only with your arms. The power comes from your core.
Learn to get back in
Practise capsizing and re-entering in shallow, warm water with a friend before you need to do it for real.
Leave the shore as you found it
The Leave No Trace principles apply on water too: take litter home, keep a respectful distance from nesting birds and wildlife, and launch from established spots.
