Swimming and Boating Safety on a Lake

Lakes look calm and feel safe, which is exactly why people underestimate them. A few rules cover most of the risk.

Wear the life jacket

A personal flotation device keeps the wearer afloat. It only works if it is worn and fits; one stored under a seat is no help after a fall overboard.

Cold water is dangerous even on warm days

Sudden immersion in cold water can trigger the cold shock response, an involuntary gasp and rapid breathing that can lead to inhaling water. Lakes can stay cold well into summer, especially below the surface.

Swimming

Boating

Supervise children closely and constantly near water. Drowning is quick and often silent.
